Create a poster for an up coming event. (4 Stars)
When I found this Event Assignment in the Design Bank I was very excited and super comforted because creating event advertisements has been part of my job in CPB for over a year now. The following are just a few of the event flyers I have created in the last year.
I decided to go ahead and use this time and effort to create an advertisement for a real event that will be happening on campus at the start of the Fall Semester. This year CPB’s back to school event will be a Hawaiian Luau! We are super excited to offer a slew of activities, food, and giveaways to welcome students back to campus.
Canva, as you can probably tell from previous posts is where I feel most comfortable working with design, and this advertisement is no exception.
To start this ad I knew I would need a good background and searched the internet trying to find one I liked. I finally settled on this image to be used as the background sans the “aloha” at the bottom of the image. I liked the color scheme that it would bring to the entire advertisement.
I uploaded the image into Canva and sized it to my liking.
I then inserted a rectangle from the elements menu to be utilized as a background for text.
I turned the rectangles transparency down because I did not want such a stark contrast between it and the background.
I then added another rectangle from the elements menu and text from the text menu, stating “University of Mary Washington Campus Programming Board” in Oswald font.
I then added a heading from the text menu, changing its font to Oswald. This heading said LUAU. I then added another heading.
I then added more text from the text menu to add the date a location of the event.
I changed the color of Hawaiian Luau to make it pop more.
I then added one last batch of text from the text menu to say “Free Food & Activities.” I chose to have free be the same color as Hawaiian Luau so it would be more eye catching, because we often have the problem of students thinking they must pay to attend our events.
I then saved the advertisement to my desktop before uploading it to Flickr. and embedding it into this post.
Overall I’m pretty happy with how this advertisement turned out, but this is also only the first draft and I’m sure I will tweak it prior to it actually being printed in the fall. Based on this ad would you come out to our event?
